This three-hour workshop will:
Explore the differences between Objective and Subjective Definitions of Trauma. Discussion will be facilitated around the types of traumas staff witness in the stories of the people they serve at the agency. Traumas from all levels of practice will be explored, such as interpersonal trauma (abuse, experience of violence) to macro traumas (poverty, micro-aggressions, global violence). An explanation of why using a trauma informed perspective as a social service worker will be provided, including the significance of trauma in the development of mental health and behavioral concerns, relational disorders, intergenerational transmission and impacts on communities.
Foundational, concrete skills such as assessment of trauma, creating and holding a safe space, self-care, the significance of the helping relationship (no matter how brief) will be provided for staff to work on until the next training. Putting support systems in place to support staff through this discussion will be discussed.
